Finals coming up

Fixed the website up slightly, didn't manage to do anything to it last week so i wanted to get something done this week. Got finals coming up though so i might neglect it for a little while. Just added something to the D&D page when you go to it and tweaked the archive. The border of the big table was a color in IE but not in Firefox.. i don't really care for that kind of incompatibility. That and i don't like IE so i don't feel like altering my website to do something cool in an explorer i don't use. And according to recent statistics you probably don't use it either.

Luckily i'd say it looks good enough not to be embarrasing though. Once i get through the list of things to update i might read up on javascript and some other things instead of doing a weekly update. Javascript seems popular these days. Might as well figure out what the big hub bub is about right? Plus i'd kind of like to have multiple backgrounds i think that's a CSS kind of thing so i need to learn more there too.

I haven't done much in the way of Java for the last couple of weeks. I'm helping my dad work on an old project he did in a class a long time ago. but i'm thinking of suggesting to him that we just work from the ground up. The code is a bit complicated and i don't think it would be that hard to start a new using his old code as a base for how to write it up again. Anyway.. just things to think about on the side. I need to concentrate on the things at hand. Calculus might not be as fun but it's gotta get done.

Learning Java

Well the text was changing color but no longer. Hopefully many things will change in the future. Haven't made a lot of progress in java this weekend. I just added a bunch of tutorials to my java worload list thingy. that way i can check them out easier. I'm planning on going over a couple of java 2d tutorials and swing kit tutorial. Then i'm going to pull out a java game programming book i found.. then i thought i might check out the slick game library.

i had some trouble with lwjgl last time i tried to install it, i think it's supposed to help you do hardware accelerating tricks but i just don't think my gpu can handle that as i'm on a laptop. The stationary computer isn't as accessible to me as it once was so i'm not really developing on there. I let the family cannablize it into some sort of "house computer" it has it's uses that way too.. so i don't really have any complaints i just wish my laptop came with better graphics chips. You'd think they would have been putting better gpu's in laptops by now but maybe the extra cooling involved was a factor they had to get over? I don't know.

Spring break's almost over and i'm not done with everything i wanted to do.. but no worries, i'm getting there.

Java Game Dev

Ok, i edited the speed ot the color switch so it's much Sloooower now. so slow that you probably won't be on long enough to see it happen unless your reading through the archive.. which acording to google analytics no one is ever on here more then 9 minutes so i doubt it's read.. but i like to keep it up all the same.

Currently following tutorials here for java game development, but i plan on going over the java 2d tutorial afterwards, to be honest i think this game one is a bit over my head, never actually did a proper learning of 2 dimensional graphic stuff in java during my class. it was pretty much like C++ this whole time, except with java.. so it's kind of not as fun. Buuut~ i'll carry on all the same, with an inferior education on the subject i'll find a way somehow! Anyway, i kinda get what's going on with the graphics, but some things baffle me so i believe his 2d tutorials will do me some good.

A lot of it doesn't feel like learning how a proper instructor or book would teach me either. It's just a bunch of code that he throws down and trying to explain chunks of it here and there.. or he just thinks we've reached a certain level(So i guess i'm sneaking in under the radar?) Now i usually spent sunday nights working on it but lately i've just picked up wherever and started working on it. Getting through it quicker this way.. it was all a part of the master plan, the sunday game dev thing was just to get me working on stuff. The schedule works.. MUAHAHAHA!!!!

yeah whatever, Personal Life. Played Golf today, Rode my bicycle on a bike trail for the first time. 5.7 miles. It's not impressive by bicycler people but they wear stretchy shorts so what do i care how they feel about it? I'm making my first steps, that plus weight training and i might bring my weight down. Here's hoping. Then i came home, ribs, crappy facebook game, Developin' Game time, And i thought i'd update my log. Now it's either nap time or Calculus time.. i'm leaning towards calculus. Test on monday. Hard to study at home but i think i'll manage today.

Colorful text

Ok i'm going to try something new, possibly even today. FuzzYspoOn of ludum dare gave me some code to help me change the color of my text. hopefully i'll be able to implement it later today. Example
Later that Day: I said some stuff. And this is what it was/is. The text coloring is working, but i'd like to limit the hues to a certain range.. which may take a little more effort. I slowed it down so people won't notice at first(hehe i'm sneaky) On another note, i learned stuff in math. Haven't eaten for the last.. 9 hours. I R hungry. and learned that my library carries books. Which you know.. i already Kind of knew but i never checked em' out or looked into any facet of the lending book thingy. Apparently most of them are online, so i might use them for java. :) They gave me the tools to learn, lets not focus on what classes i have and what books i'm actually reading. It's there. that's what matters.

I also spent a large amount of time trying to fix up the DND section. Haven't touched story but the actual profiles. Technically the only ones that are up to date are clickies who was played by a good friend of mine, and Gray's whom i edited.

Archive

The projects section is probably going to stay the way it is for awhile.. i want to add descriptions with javascript, but i don't really want to take the time to learn javascript at the moment. If i run out of other things to do in the meantime i'll probably come back to it though.

I've decided to make my java calculator an applet so i could share it on here. figured i might get a little more use out of it that way. Plus it'll be something else to put up on my java projects section. Although i just got through the moving sprites section of a tutorial and now i'm in the Collision detection section. I haven't really built anything from it yet that involves any of my own creativity.. So i just don't feel right sharing. But the tutorial seems to be extremely well put together based on the other tutorials i've read up to this point. I'll post a link when i finally hit a point with it that i feel comfortable with sharing.

I think the Archive might be my next project, it takes like 64 kb's which is a lot for just text, i think these tables take up more space then is really efficient or smart. So i can atleast take the outer one out, i don't want to get started on it now though and find out it has become some great big thing. I'll save it for web dev day(Wednesday)

Dropbox = efficient

I fixed up my projects section, that arguable looks better now. I'm also setting up a dropbox for all of the computers in the house. It's pretty neat if you haven't heard of it before. It's like a free 2 gigs sitting out on the web that you can hook your computer up to. Then i put some files i have to edit constantly on there and drew a link from that to my grandmothers website. :) it's all kind of nifty. Now whenever i edit the file i don't have to move it between computer or upload it to the interenet, it's all done simultaniously.

Missed Game Dev day last week :( which is sadness. but i did a little on the website yesterday so i feel somewhat accomplished. It's raining pretty bad here right now not looking forward to class later.

Think Geek background

Well i spent over 4 hours today working on the website, which is nice after math i must admit. It needs progress in the long run and i like taking care of it in small installments instead of losing a few days to it..
Anyway i was trying to think of a new background image that could work for the website, help uniformity and cut down on the file size of the old one. Which really wasn't much of an issue. It's not like i don't have the space for it but having a lot of large images on my website is something i'd like to avoid as a practice. This way everything will load much faster, and people using phones can acess things much faster. Ideally someday i'd like to use this as a part of a portfolio and if anyone is going to check it out i'd imagine it'd be on a phone for the convenience of it. Anyway here is what i WANT the background to look like: Think Geek Rip-Off don't forget to scroll to the bottom!

I mean ideally it's not going to have the robots and the same color scheme, not because i don't like them.. Zombies and Robots are pretty awesome after all. But the people who made it had a pretty clever idea, and i'd feel wrong copying them to closely. But i do like the idea and would like ton incorporate it into my website when i can :)

Anyway, the people from Ludum Dare have been helping me out a lot recently on my web dev day's and thanks to them i'd like to think i'm making a lot of positive changes to the look and functionality of the website.
